BACKGROUND:
The Children's Folk Dance Festival is entering its 41st year! The festival of international folk dances for children in grades 3-8 has traveled throughout Indianapolis over the years, including the Indianapolis Convention Center and Pepsi Coleseum. It originally started with a small group of children and a few teachers but has recently included over 20 schools and thousands of students.
Marie Lawlor has been the Festival Director for the past several years in Indianapolis, having previously co-directed with one of the original founding teachers of the festival. She is an experienced dancer in traditional, international dance and trains the teachers who participate in the festival, allowing us to teach our students. She also facilitates the festival on the day of the event.
Teachers who register and participate in the festival receive a Festival Training DVD, Festival CD of the music, Festival Training packet (dance instructions), and Training Session(s) as needed or requested. Registered schools have a one-time registration fee ($25) to training materials and hosting costs, and students participate for free unless the individual teacher/school charges a fee (shirts, club fee, etc). Families and festival attendees purchase a $5 adult/$3 student ticket on site the day of the festival.
