IMEA Honor Band Information

It is time to begin planning for the 2011 IMEA State Convention and specifically the 2011 IMEA Honor Band. It is with great pleasure that I announce to you that Dr. Tim Lautzenheiser will serve as the guest conductor of the 2011 IMEA Honor Band!

I am most confident that your students will walk away with an extremely positive experience having played for Dr. Tim! For more information on Tim Lautzenheiser, visit: www.attitudeconcepts.com.

Rehearsals for this year's Honor Band will begin on Thursday evening, January 20 at Indiana-Purdue University Fort Wayne Campus' Walb Student Union Ballroom, and will conclude with the Saturday, January 22, 2011, 10:00 AM IMEA Honor Band concert in the historic Embassy Theatre, Fort Wayne, IN. Make sure your students are available for all three of these days.

The fee for participation is to be determined. This includes all of their meals, music, two nights' hotel at the Holiday Inn Coliseum Boulevard (Fort Wayne, adjacent to IPFW), and all administrative costs. Fees will be collected after notification of acceptance. There are no audition/nomination fees.

As a member of IMEA, you may nominate up to THREE of your finest students for the IMEA Honor Band. To do so, you must go to the IMEA website (www.imeamusic.org), and under IMEA Honor Activities/Ensembles, click on the IMEA Honor Band and follow the instructions. You will need to create a teacher login and have your MENC membership number available. You do need to be a member of MENC to nominate your students. The nomination process is similar to an ISSMA / IMEA form where you will type in all of the information on the website AND then print off the forms and mail them to me at the address listed on the forms. You may do this anytime between Monday, September 20, 2010, and Monday, November 1, 2010. Please don't wait until November 1 to look for your MENC ID number! If you cannot find your MENC ID number, please contact MENC's membership department at 800-336-3768, and ask for the membership department. All forms MUST be postmarked by November 1, 2010, to be accepted.

To assist you in gathering information on your students, there is a Student Data Collection Form enclosed in your mailing and available online however, this form is NOT what you send in to nominate students but rather intended to aid you in completing the online nomination process.

Please remember: YOU STILL NEED TO PRINT OFF THE FORMS AND MAIL THEM ALONG WITH THE PARENT SIGNATURE SHEET & THE VERIFICATION SHEET which will print out for you when you print the nomination forms.

Keep in mind that the philosophy of the IMEA Honor Band is a little different from a typical "auditioned" all-state group. We are interested in getting as many schools represented as possible while still maintaining the highest quality of personnel. We do not guarantee we will take one student from each school but will attempt to get as many schools represented as possible. The following criterion will be used by the IMEA Honor Band selection committee:
  • A student’s participation in the ISSMA Solo/ Ensemble contest (Group I solo, Gold rating level at State will be given the greatest consideration – difficulty of solo literature is considered as well – list titles)

  • A student’s previous participation in the IMEA Honor Band or other state honor bands  (IBA All-state Band, IBA All-district, college “all-star” ensembles, community ensembles, etc.)

  • Whether or not the student studies privately on his/her instrument, and if so, for how long, etc.

  • Grade level is considered, with priority given to upperclassmen.

  • Your recommendation as their director.  Please be honest and consistent.
We look forward to hearing from you as you recommend your best students for this wonderful opportunity.  Please plan to attend the 2010 convention yourself. It is one of the best professional opportunities offered to you as a music educator in the State of Indiana. If you have any questions, please contact Doug Fletcher by calling the Highland High School Music Department office, 765-641-2068 (ext. 2); by cell phone at 765-744-5567, or by e-mail at: dfletch@acsc.net
