IMEA Honor Band Information

It is time to begin planning for the 2008 Indiana Music Educators Association State Convention and specifically the 2008 IMEA Honor Band.  It is with great pleasure that I announce to you that Mr. Jay S. Gephart will serve as the guest conductor of the 2008 IMEA Honor Band.  Jay is currently the Director of Bands at Purdue University.  I am most confident that your students will walk away with an extremely positive experience having played for Mr. Gephart.  For more information on Jay, visit www.purdue.edu/bands.

Rehearsals for this year’s Honor Band will begin on Friday morning, January 18 and will conclude with the 1:00 p.m. IMEA Honor Band concert in the Sagamore Ballroom of the Indiana Convention Center on Saturday, January 19.  Please make sure your students are available for both of these days prior to nominating them.

The fee for participation is $135.  This includes all of their meals, each students’ room at the Sheraton Indianapolis City Centre Hotel (formerly the Radisson), and all administrative costs, etc.  Fees will be collected after notification of acceptance.  There are no audition/nomination fees.

As a member of IMEA, you may nominate up to THREE of your finest students for the IMEA Honor Band.  The necessary forms for nominating your students are available ONLINE from the IMEA website.  Please notice that there is one form for wind players and a separate form for percussionists.  We ask that each director submit no more than three (3) applications, and that these applications be submitted no later than October 31, 2007.

Please be sure to complete the verification form with your online applications.  Keep in mind that the philosophy of the IMEA Honor Band is a little different from a typical “auditioned” all-state group.  We are interested in getting as many schools represented as possible while still maintaining the highest quality of personnel possible.  The following criterion will be used by the IMEA Honor Band selection committee:

  • A student’s participation in the ISSMA Solo Ensemble contest (Group I solo, Gold rating level will be given the greatest consideration)

  • A student’s previous participation in the IMEA Honor Band or other state honor bands  (IBA, Collegiate, etc.)

  • Whether or not the student studies privately on his/her instrument.

  • Grade level is considered with priority given to upperclassmen.

  • Your recommendation as their director.  Please be honest and consistent.

We look forward to hearing from you as you recommend your best students for this wonderful opportunity.  Please plan to attend the 2008 convention yourself.  It is one of the best professional opportunities offered to you as a music educator in the State of Indiana.  If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me by calling the Highland Music Dept. office, 765-641-2068, my home at 765-287-8114, my cell at 765-744-5567, or by e-mail at:  dfletch@acsc.net   Thank You!
