IMEA Non-Competitive Festivals

IMEA is proud to offer the opportunity for schools to participate in one of our Non-Competitive Festivals.

What are the Non-Competitive Festivals?

The IMEA Non-Competitive Festivals provides groups with an opportunity to perform for a panel of clinicians in an educational environment.  After each performance, a clinician works with each group in a rehearsal setting.  In addition to the clinic, directors receive a set of taped comments from the clinicians as well as a videotape of their performance and clinic sessions.

Who can come?

  1. Elementary schools
  2. Middle schools
  3. High schools
  4. Concert Bands
  5. Stage Bands
  6. Jazz Bands
  7. Orchestras
  8. Choirs

When and where are the festivals?

Our festivals are held on March 1, 2008 and March 8, 2008 at various locations around the state.

Why should I bring my group?

The focus of the Non-Competitive Festival is on the experience of performing quality literature and education, not on a rating.  The clinicians assign no rankings to groups that perform.  The power of the festival centers on the immediate feedback received by each group during the clinic session.  Clinicians work with groups to reinforce what is taught in class, while providing positive feedback for the work that has been done.  Each performance group receives a plaque that commemorates their experience at the festival.

What is the cost?

If you register prior to February 1, 2008, the cost is as follows:

  • Elementary Schools - $100 per group

  • Middle School and High School - $150 per group

If you register after February 1, 2008, the cost is as follows:

  • Elementary Schools - $125 per group

  • Middle School and High School - $175 per group

Is there a required music list for the festival?

No, we do not have a required list for our festival.  We encourage directors to play pieces they would normally play in concert.  You may perform anywhere from 1-3 pieces of music for the performance.

Do we have to sight-read?

No!  Sight-reading is an option at all our festivals in place of one of your pieces, but is not required.

How long are the performances and clinics?

We plan for each performance to take no longer than 20 minutes, with the clinic lasting 20 minutes as well.

Do we need to stay for the entire day of festival?

No.  Your site host will contact you with your warm-up and performance times.  You will receive your plaque at the completion of your performance.

Will any equipment be provided by the site?

In some cases, sites may have some equipment available for your use.  For specific information, please contact the host at the site you are interested in attending.

Do we need to bring extra copies of the music for the clinicians?

Yes, please plan to bring three extra copies for the clinicians to use during your performance.  IMEA adheres to copyright law and expects all of our participants to do the same.

If I have questions, who should I contact?

For any questions, please contact Missie Sedam at dmelissasedam@comcast.net
