Dissolution Motion

Indiana General Music Educators Association

Motion of Dissolution

Motion included in 2007 IGMEA Fall newsletter:
MaryAnn Fritz, secretary, has moved.
Cecil Shoemaker, acting president, has seconded.
Executive Board concurs.
Membership will finalize vote on September 29, 2007 by voice and returned ballot.  (Amended 7/18/2007)

WHEREAS, the IGMEA (Indiana General Music Educators Association - formerly the Indiana Elementary Music Educators Association) originally existed to provide in-service opportunities to elementary and middle school general music teachers, as well as to award a scholarship to a senior undergraduate music education student of an accredited School of Music in the state of Indiana interested in general music teaching, and

WHEREAS, the Indiana Music Educators Association (IMEA) now meets these needs through the Society for General Music,

Be it moved that the Indiana General Music Educators (IGMEA) be dissolved after the Fall Workshop on Saturday, September 29, 2007 with the following understandings:

  • the last Saturday in September always be reserved for an IMEA-sponsored General Music workshop, of the same type that IGMEA has been providing,

  • the IMEA be strongly encouraged to study the feasibility of awarding an annual scholarship to a senior in an Indiana undergraduate program of music education interested in teaching elementary or middle school general music, as the IGMEA as done for many years,

  • the current IGMEA Executive Board leadership be included in this transition for at least one year under the chair of the Society for General Music,

  • the IMEA agrees to assign the planning of the Fall Workshop to the current chair of the Society for General Music with the assistance and creation of a Society for General Music committee to be made up of members of the IMEA who have an interest in or teach elementary &/or middle school general music

  • continued workshop fee provisions will be made for student, retired and non- members.

Rationale:

  • This will end confusion between the organizations. IGMEA has always been a separate organization from IMEA. Many music teachers do not realize that the IGMEA and IMEA have existed separately, although many music teachers pay dues to both organizations.

  • Music teachers would have only one dues payment for the same benefits.

  • IMEA resources can be used to help publicize and fund workshops.

  • The Fall Workshop will be essentially the same workshop, just under a different title.
