Indiana General Music Educators Association
CONSTITUTION
ARTICLE I - Name
The name of this organization shall be the Indiana General Music Educators
Association. The Indiana General Music Educators Association is a nonprofit,
educational organization.
ARTICLE II - Purpose
Section 1:
The purpose of this organization is to raise the level of musical experiences
for all children in kindergarten through grade eight, by demonstrating
pedagogical standards, methods, and procedures that will promote musical
understanding, skills and attitudes leading to greater artistic achievements.
Section 2: Specific ways through which this purpose might be accomplished will
be:
A. To demonstrate a greater degree of understanding and unity in educational
methods.
B. To sponsor workshops and conferences dealing with elementary and middle
school music.
ARTICLE III - Membership
Section 1: Active membership in the Indiana General Music Educators Association
is open to all:
A. Who are professionally engaged in teaching at the elementary/middle school
level.
B. Who are engaged in training teachers at the elementary/middle school level.
C. Who are engaged in supervising music at the elementary/middle school level.
D. Who are professionally engaged in the music industry and who provide
materials for the implementation of the educational program.
E. Who are retired from any of the above categories.
F. Who are students in music education at the college level.
G. Who are not currently teaching in music education.
Section 2: Dues and Fees
A. The fee for each workshop shall include membership, registration, and an IMEA
“Circle the State with Song” reading packet.
B. Membership dues for each fiscal year shall be $15. $25.00 (Adopted 9/30/2006)
C. The workshop fee for students and those professionally retired or in-active
shall be $10.00.
D. Other fees and categories shall be determined by action of the Executive
Board.
ARTICLE IV - Organization
Section 1:
The elected officers of the organization shall carry on the official business of
the organization with the approval of the membership at each workshop.
Section 2:
A. The officers are President, Vice-President, Secretary, and Treasurer which
will serve as the Executive Board along with the Past-President.
1. The offices of President and Vice-President shall be filled or elected every
two years at the fall workshop.
2. The office of Treasurer shall be appointed annually by the President.
3. The office of Secretary shall be a two year term elected in the year when the
President and Vice-president are not up for re-election.
B. In the event the President resigns or the office is vacated during the term
of the office of the Presidency, the Vice-President immediately assumes the
office of President until the next workshop. This in no way prevents the interim
President to be elected to the Presidency at the next fall workshop.
C. The Vice-President shall serve as Liaison to the IMEA Board if invited
D. The office of Vice-President shall lead to the office of President at the
conclusion of the President's term at the fall workshop.
E. The four Officers along with the Past President shall serve as the Executive
Board.
F. Vacancies in the Executive Board may be appointed by the President with the
approval of the Executive Board Members.
Section 3: Presidential Appointments
A. Nominating Committee
1. The President shall be responsible for appointing a nominating committee.
This committee will draw up a slate of candidates to be presented to the
Executive Board for presentation at the fall workshop when two year terms have
expired.
2. Members of the nominating committee are not to be on the slate.
B. The President shall appoint an auditor(1), exhibits committee(2), membership
committee(2), "Circle the State" representative(1), historian(1), hosts or
hostesses for upcoming workshops, and at least 6 members-at-large. These members
along with other committees as are deemed necessary for conducting the business
of the organization shall constitute the Advisory Board.
C. The President shall appoint the editor of the newsletter at his/her
digression.
Section 4: Rules contained in Roberts' Rules of Order shall govern the
association.
Section 5: The fiscal year shall be from September 1 to August 31.
Section 6: There shall be a state-wide workshop each year the last Saturday in
September.
ARTICLE V - Amendments
Section 1: This constitution may be amended by a simple majority vote of the
active members present at the fall workshop.
Section 2: Proposed amendments must be approved first by the executive board and
then presented to the members of the organization for discussion and vote at the
fall workshop.
ARTICLE VI - By-laws
Section 1: Students without a valid teaching certificate may be a member of the
organization but may not hold office and are not entitled to vote.
Section 2: There shall be a minimum of one newsletter published each year.
Section 3: The Executive Board members will be reimbursed for expenses incurred
for the business of the organization.
Section 4: Workshop expenses will be reimbursed with approval of the Executive
Board.
Section 5: The Executive and Advisory Boards shall meet the night before the
Fall Workshop, and in July with another optional meeting at the IMEA convention.
Section 6: By-laws may be added to this constitution by a vote of the active
members present at a workshop business meeting.
Section 7: Proposed by-laws must be approved first by the Executive and Advisory
Boards and then presented to the members of the organization for discussion and
vote at a workshop business meeting.
